The world says the ocean is cold,
Brutal and bitter and old,
It’s merciless, devoid of hope.
Still, the ocean is the warmest,
With life thriving within it,
Souls, lives and waves dwell in it,
All in perfect harmony,
Within its warm caress.
Within it, lives an oyster,
Vibrant, vital and valiant,
It fashions a pearl with nothing but sand,
The pearl, a jewel by nature’s hand,
The oyster fades, the pearl forever stands,
The ocean mothers the oyster,
The oyster mothers the pearl,
They give themselves, complete and whole,
They remain ephemeral to give something eternal.
A mother is much the same, I’d say,
She nurtures, she bears and she stands,
With nothing in return….
None at all—
She beholds her legacy, smiles one final time,
Then slips into the light, leaving only love behind.
